The Sprague assaults by Charles H. Rugg rocked the town in the winter of 1884. Key local figures in this case were Spragues and Petits, who were farmers on Front Street. The assault followed the 1883 Maybee murders in Brookville. The accused man was hanged for his crimes in 1885.
